|
Raised in the Philadelphia area, Skip has always been interested in media and music. His father, who is a
minister, started a production company to use non-traditional means to deliver the “message”. Skip started
working at the company at the age of 14. He learned how to operate broadcast cameras and sound equipment.
Skip’s father gave him two turntables and a Radio Shack Realistic mixer and things began to take off. He
started Djing neighborhood parties and making mix tapes. After graduating high school, Skip attended
Oakwoood University in Huntsville, Alabama. This is where Skip Cheatham got his first radio job at WOCG,
his college radio station. Skip’s first radio mentor was former KDAY Los Angeles great Don Mac who at that
time was running the college station while he was studying for the ministry. Skip later transferred to the
University of Southern Mississippi for an opportunity to work at a commercial radio station.
WJMG in Hattiesburg, Mississippi is where he further developed his skills. One day, the Promotions Director
from a station in another city stopped by after hearing Skip on the air, and asked him, “What are you doing in
Hattiesburg? You should be in he big city”. So after sending a tape and very short resume, Skip landed a job
in the “Big City” of Mobile Alabama at WBLX. Skip worked his way up the ranks very quickly. He started
doing overnights for about two weeks, and then he worked afternoon drive and was quickly appointed
Assistant Program Director and morning show host. Shortly after that he was made Program Director. After
keeping WBLX #1, Skip began to feel like he was a big fish in a small pond and wanted to see if he had the
skills to be a big fish in an ocean.
Skip announced his resignation at WBLX and was hired at KKDA/K104 in Dallas, Texas as Program Director
and afternoon drive personality. Skip’s popularity grew by leaps and bounds resulting in him becoming the
host of the #1 rated morning radio show “Skip Cheatham & DaPlayground” Since coming to Dallas, Skip has
