GILBERT G.
BIO
Gilbert comes from a great family with great morals and values. He has five siblings, four brothers and a baby sister. Gilbert's the middle child, between two older and younger brothers and sister. Coming from a small community, he's learned how important it is to be united. Shortly after graduating high school from the small town of O'Donnell, TX, 45 south of Lubbock, Gilbert took almost a year off, before deciding to join the U.S. Armed Forces The U.S. Navy in 1991, soon after he was sent to do some training before being stationed in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, then Puerto Rico. Unfortunately, while in Puerto Rico, not even two months into his tour on the island, Gilbert had a severe accident where he was injured with life-threatening injuries. He was quickly medivac'd out back to the states, where he spent four months lying on his back while at the same time enduring over 30 surgical procedures to his lower and upper extremities, such as his entire right leg, right knee, right femur, right tibula, left foot, left wrist/elbow, right wrist/elbow, and right hip. Since then, Gilbert's learned the true meaning of survival. A year later, Gilbert was medically and honorably discharged from The U.S. Armed Forces as a 60% Service-Connected Disabled Veteran. Since his release, Gilbert's gone through many additional surgeries from his military injuries, and continues to have them at the present time, he is now at a 100% Service-Connected Disabled Veteran status.
Despite his adversity, obstacles in life, Gilbert's been resilient. He always knew he would accomplish one of his many goals in life, attending college somehow. In 2001 he decided to take advantage of his Veteran Administration (VA) educational benefits. Gilbert quickly jumped at the opportunity and enrolled into college to take some college courses at The Dallas County Community College District. He began taking courses at North Lake College in Irving, TX, then finally finishing off at Eastfield College in Mesquite, TX. Despite his on-going surgical procedures, and losing his father to lung cancer in 2005, he still managed to get back up each time he was knocked down, completing his courses on time, finally graduating and earning his Associate in Arts in May 2008. During the same time he was taking his final courses at Eastfield College, around the beginning of the 2007 Fall semester, Gilbert transferred to The University of North Texas in Dallas, where he took as many as 22 hours one semester, including May and Summer courses in order to complete his required 45 hours of college courses within one year's time. Gilbert finally graduated from UNT/Dallas in May 2008 earning his Bachelors in The Criminal Justice Field, with two courses shy each of earning a triple degree plan to include Addiction and Social Work. Gilbert does plan to return back to school and earn his Masters degree very soon. However, he is also thinking of simply going back to under graduate status and hopefully earning a Broadcasting and Journalism Degree if he is not allowed to switch his major from Criminal Justice and so he can earn his Master's Degree, instead. Since graduating w/a criminal justice degree from UNT/Dallas, Gilbert has yet to put his degree to use due to his love for music and radio.
At a young age Gilbert's loved the beat to any music. Although, he always dreamt of being a singer, due to his military injuries, his dream was slightly derailed. At a young age, Gilbert's friends would always encourage him to follow a singing career, as did his military buddies while stationed in Cuba and Puerto Rico. Although they knew about his singing talent, they also knew about his personality and voice as a potential great radio disc-jockey. No matter where they'd be, his friends always wanted Gilbert to imitate a radio DJ. After all his injuries, and obstacles he's faced in life, Gilbert thought it just wasn't meant for him. In 1995-1996, Gilbert got his feet wet by helping out a local Tejano radio station in San Angelo, TX. At the time, he was taking some summer courses in Math and working a full-time job, so he decided to take the latter. In 2005-2006, after reading on one of Eastfield College bulletin boards about an audition for a radio gig, Gilbert decided to try out radio once again. He's always known he's had the “It” to make it in radio. After auditioning, Gilbert quickly was offered a job and be a part of The Promotions Team for 97.1 FM La Preciosa where he carried out many events out on the Dallas/Ft. Worth streets, clubs and venues. However, education was still Gilbert's #1 goal, after a year, Gilbert knew, so he decided to dedicate his time and give his 100% for his academics if he was to earn his degrees. Shortly after graduating college, Gilbert, once again, had no idea what he wanted to pursue. After sitting at home one day thinking of a way to showcase his talent and get into The Tejano industry, he found out The 2009 Tejano Music Convention was being held in Dallas that year. If it's one thing Gilbert's good at, it's making cold-calls, researching and getting what he wants, he quickly started researching who he needed to get in touch with in order to get himself inside The 2009 Tejano Music Convention. He spoke with Ricardo Hernandez of Aur-Marc Management, a vital person in the Tejano industry. He explained how he would like to be a part of the convention, and how he'd like to write up an article piece on the entire event. Mr. Hernandez quickly took a liking to Gilbert and invited him to hotel and gave him access passes to all the events being held at the music convention. Gilbert took advantage, met lots of people in the industry, as well as great friends, and most importantly, scored an audition with TexMexFM in DFW. Monday came around and the program director of TexMexFM called Gilbert asking him to come over to their studio for an audition. The rest is history. Gilbert soon took over the Tuesday & Thursday shows, with The Gilbert G. Show broadcasting Live from 12noon- 6pm slot shows, as well as quickly helping TexMexFM gain much more listeners, in addition, showcasing his talent and demonstrating great on-air personality, as well as being able to go out and meet people of interest, and soon was scoring huge events for TexMexFM DFW, such as La Mafia's 30th Year Anniversary at The Alamodome in San Antonio, TX, Jim Luna's Quartermoon Production Events in Angleton, TX, The 2010 Mexican Fiesta in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, as well as events with Cristina Balli of The Texas Folklife Organization in Austin, TX. Some DJ's in the DFW area are quick in making sure everyone notices Gilbert's only been in the Tejano industry less than four years, but what they won't say, is how quickly he's been fortunate to meet ton's of people, artist, promoters, club owners and has worked with the best in the Tejano Music Industry. Gilbert quickly scored high profile interviews, with the likes of Oscar De La Rosa and Mando Litchenberger of La Mafia, Jimmy Gonzales of Grupo Mazz, Michael Salgado, Elida Reyna, Jesse Turner, Shelly Lares, The Legendary Freddie Martinez and many more. Gilbert's been asked to Host/Guest Emcee huge events through out The State of Texas in his short two years in the Tejano industry. Gilbert's has appeared on Planeta 3 TV/D3i Media, as well as “Viernes Caliente” a hot Mexican TV show in Houston, TX. Gilbert's been requested to Co-Host along side 2010 Ms. Univision Republica Deportiva, Cynthia Pina for “The Return of Emilio Navaira” back to Houston for the first time since 2008 by Planeta 3/Houston, chosen as “One of the Top Five Celebrity Judges” along side many greats, such as Patsy Torres & Brandy Lopez of Latin Fusion TV/San Antonio by Dr. Paul Ruiz, has been asked to join Texas Folklife in Weslaco, TX and be a part of their Bi-National Conjunto/Norteno Convening along side great promoters, producers, writers & singers from both sides of the border, Texas and Monterrey, Nuevo Leon Mexico, The 2010 Harley Davidson Event in Sequin, TX, The Schertz Fest in Schertz, TX and many more. Gilbert G. and Marmiaheaven Productions have been asked to help coordinate huge events, such as when the Mayor from O'Donnell, his hometown, asked him to assist the community with their 100th Centennial/Cotton Fest Festivals. Gilbert was able to bring down Latin Grammy Award Winners, Elida Reyna y Avante. People are still calling it the Best Cotton Fest ever in O'Donnell, TX. In addition, Gilbert & Marmiaheaven Productions has promoted other huge events to include, concerts & dances in cities, such as Tahoka, Lubbock, Schertz, Amarillo, Seguin, Lamesa, & Dallas, TX, as well as in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. In addition to Elida Reyna, Gilbert has worked with Da Krazy Pimpz, AJ Castillo, Mazz, Los Garcia Brothers, Shelly Lares, Cinco Doce, David Lee Garza y Los Musicales, La Sombra, Fama, Grupo Maldad, Augustine Ramirez, Joe Bravo, Little Joe, Roberto Pulido, Ruben Ramos, Los Aguilares and many more.
Shortly before leaving TexMexFM, Gilbert was hired to Co-Host at The Alamo Restaurant & Bar, 2701 N. Stemmons Freeway, Dallas, TX. Since then, Gilbert has helped pull his weight by bringing in a bigger clientele, an 85% increase in less than a month at The Alamo in Dallas. Gilbert would like to thank Marvin Madrid, General Manager at The Alamo in Dallas for the opportunity he has given him in showcasing his talents, by helping bring out to The Alamo, the likes of Gary Hobbs, Marc Martinez of Freddie Records Recording Label out of Corpus Christi, TX, as well as bringing Los Garcia Brothers and Tony Guerrero y La Sombra for The Alamo's 1st Annual Appreciation Concert on September 30, 2011. The Alamo is now a well-recognized and established restaurant business, and known as the place to be on a Friday Night.
Although, Gilbert gives a huge thanks to TexMexFM DFW for the opportunity, Gilbert has since joined a new network in Fish Bowl Radio Network. The last two years, Gilbert has been offered many positions as an “On-Air Radio Personality” from different radio stations, as well as many online radio stations, but he always knew he would not leave until the right opportunity came along. Fish Bowl Radio Network was able to do just that. As soon as Gilbert was asked to join their network, he quickly jumped on the opportunity, Gilbert knew exactly what he had in mind. Given the opportunity, equipment, professional staff and the capability to have his show heard around the globe while at Fish Bowl Radio Network, it was a no-brainer!!
